2024 Oct-Croatia Thu 3. Split (Plitvice Lakes)

After being pampered on a group tour I am now back to soloing. There is some pleasure organising your own day travels. I had pre-booked my accommodation, transport and day tours...so not really any 'on the run' organising.

The only real change is taking care of my own food. Previously, I was just joining the group members for some fine dining.

I have too many days planned for long trips. Even when I arrive into Istanbul in three day's time it will be go, go, go. When you spend this much to fly across the world to see things, then you better get to do it all. There can be no regrets.

It has been raining hard. It also got a little cold. It will be the first time I've had to bring out my waterproof pants. Sadly, my Kathmandu stretch wind jacket will not handle the rain. I had to buy a plastic poncho at the national park (€11).

Joining a coach day tour can be annoying. People do not meet at the agreed times. I say...anyone that misses the time should be left behind. It is just inconsiderate. Gil needs to keep calm.

I have been trying to get fit during the holidays. I have not been able to stick to a diet as the previous group dining was 'fine dining'. The food portion sizes are also large 'ish' in this region. With my long days of travelling my diet will get back to schedule. All I had for food for 24hrs was a bowl of cream cheese cucumber salad. Bring on the starvation diet.

One of the NZ group members in the previous group tour was a foodie. If you didn't feed her she'd get 'hangry'. You could see it building up. She would never actually get angry (as she is a soft-talker) but the tell-tale signs were she would lose interest and become quiet. A bit like a baby that gets tired over a long day, then plonks. I am observant 😉

The day tour to Plitvice Lakes started at 6:50am (bus). I haven't started that early since the start of September. We returned from the trip at approx 7:00pm. 12hrs = Ouch.

It takes 4hrs in each direction to get to Plitvice Lakes.

The waterfalls and clear water of the lakes were impressive. The main waterfall was heavy due to the rains. At least the rain brought on a show.

Even on a wet day there were quite a few tourist buses (myself included).

Plitvice Lakes has a lot of trails. Probably better to do it yourself over a couple of days, staying nearby to maximise your time. Too much time is lost through commuting from Split.

The end of the day was followed by another night walk. I saw more of the old town area. Reminds me of a larger and more modern Kotor, Montenegro.
