The North Face (TNF) Base Camp Duffle Bag size XL

*and bright yellow to stand out in the luggage carousels...but everybody seems to have the same idea.

What an amazing bag! Simply durable. I have used this bag for an Aconcagua expedition and the Cho Oyu expedition. There were a few wear areas arising from the Aconcagua expedition on the bag that I have subsequently seam sealed to do minor repair to avoid that same area wearing out from rope friction on the mules.

Coming out of the Cho Oyu expedition, there was no wear on the bags at all, just a bit more dirtier as expected. The yaks/handlers in Tibet must be more gentle than the mules/handlers in Aconcagua. Less wear because we also used trucks in Tibet.

This is a very durable bag for expeditions and that is why so many people on expeditions use them. They are heavily copied for that reason.

My other duffel was a cheapie from the local Anaconda retail chain (specific shop brand of Denali). This bag by comparison had its zippers broken before I even left home! It is rubbish by comparison as the Denali had significantly wear in edges of the bag...but what do you expect from a cheapie? That said, it is still good for another expedition (its last one) whereas the TNF will most likely last a further 2-3 expeditions. You also have the confidence that the TNF will not fail you in the field!

I'd buy another TNF duffel due to its resilience over another cheapie. This is a well designed product by TNF with excellent lash points around the bag, large lid pocket and durable.

  1. I liked the reliability of the TNF duffel that I purchased a second red one that I am currently using for my Everest and Lhotse expedition. I put my money where my mouth is.
