A day of self-exploring. Sadly, there is not much more to see in Madurai.
Sites visited today were:
1) Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace.
2) St. Mary's Cathedral.
3) Neerazhi Mandabam.
4) Vandiyur Lake.
The Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace was surprisingly underwhelming. It did not have the detail in design that I would have expected from a palace. What it had was size/volume, but that was about it. The next stop on the tour has an excellent palace that will get my fingers snapping a lot of pictures.
Much like the rest of India, the waters (lake and rivers) are always polluted. I dare not touch.
Madurai was surprisingly polluted for such a small place. It really shocked me that people treat their city like a rubbish tip. This is the main culture shock that I take away from this holiday.
I did experience the worst of Uber in Madurai. A tuk tuk driver tried to get me to pay more from an Uber booking before we departed. He pretended not to know the direction. I told him to confirm the booking on Uber and the directions. He kept pressing for more money. I politely told him where to go and cancelled the booking.
In hindsight, I should have accepted to pay him more at the end, but not pay. Scam the scammer. I just didn't think on my feet quick enough.
